Action Cam Underground

We went back to Tamagawa Daishi for another half-day of shooting. This time though we strapped GoPros to ourselves before entering the tunnel. Maybe it’s a bit silly, but we figured why not. We’re not making an “action” video, so most likely we’ll not be using the footage. Still, it’s fun to have lying around at least as something to throw in the company archive. Another reason why we probably won’t be using the GoPro footage is that it looks too much like footage from a POV horror movie. We’re trying to depict the tunnel as a mystical experience, not a haunted catacomb. I think it’s difficult to get away from the associations that come along with the kind of POV footage you can get off a GoPro. It always inevitably looks like a horror movie, an “x-treme” sports video, or that UGC/Instagram look. Nonetheless, I like the idea of strapping a GoPro to our chest whatever we’re filming. You get a record of the shoot and if you’re lucky (and you’re not in a dimly-lit tunnel) you have some usable footage as backup. Here’s a small sample from GoPro footage we were able to capture:
